The statistics are startling:
- 1.1 billion people in the world do not have access to safe drinking water, roughly one-sixth of the world's population.
- 2.2 million people in developing countries, mostly children, die each year from diseases associated with unsafe drinking water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene.
- 50% of the world's hospital beds are filled with people suffering from water related illnesses.
- Women in Africa and Asia walk about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) just to collect water.
